What causes people to stay in love while other relationships fizzle? Some people manage to keep the flame alive while others give up and the relationship fades out. Why is this? Is this due to brain activity, individual values and beliefs, true love, etc.?

peterpaul 		Relationships that fade are created by unhappy people. The key to a good relationship is happiness, hard work and compromise. I was married for five years to an unhappy woman who gave up on our marriage. I am now twelve years married to a positive woman with a great attitude. I am a lucky man so lasting love could be partially based on luck.

rahulm 		People manage to keep the flame alive by having common interests and passions. I did read the article though and it could be true. It makes a convincing argument bu t I think more evidence is needed.

sandra 		Commitment. I think some couples both have a commitment to the relationship, and some couples one person is committed to the relationship, and the other one is not. I think communication is the key to every relationship, so couples that have learned to communicate with each other, even leaving notes in a lunch box, making time for date nights, things like that, they will last longer. I also think toooooo many people in relationships don't feel appreciated, and they don't realize their mate doesn't feel appreciated either. There are also millions of people in relationships, marriages, simply because they can't afford the divorce. There are millions of people that are married, but not happily married. I think a couple with strong faith has a better chance of staying together, their common bond is the faith.

mariaz 		I have been married for over forty years and from my experience, relationships last mainly because of compromise. Humans are not meant to be monogamous, so this takes much patience and compromise

peterpaul 		I believe in common goals. If you and your partner have similar beliefs and future goals then there is less to fight about. This makes the path to a successful relationship much smoother. When people are too different relationships require more work.

rahulm 		I can only offer my opinion on this.
I think a lot of people expect love to be all about bells and whistles and fireworks, and once those are gone, the feeling is gone for them.
Love isn't always about a feeling. Sometimes feelings simply fade, or aren't as intense at certain times, it is during those times that the relationship is at a plateau, and though a feeling isn't noticeably present, often the love is taking deeper root if the two people are committed to one another.

Personally, I prefer the feelings of love that have come from a long relationship, after the fireworks have gone. (though they resurface from time to time) and what is left is something deep, comforting, steady and beautiful.

peterpaul 		I think it is all of the above. People meet because of true love, their bond is supported by shared interests, values, and beliefs and it maintains because of similar brain activity

george 		Much research has been completed on this topic. I am a believer of true love but I have seen some interesting information that suggests long term relationships can be strengthened by hormone release. I would have to agree with this information but ultimately true love plays a role in staying in love.
