What do florist look for when hiring ?

I'm 16 and no job experience(yikes!). Though I'd really like to work at my local flowershop as a part-timer. I know at first it'll only be cleaning and prep-work, but is there something that florist really look for? Is there something that might make me stand out?

rahulm 		I am not a florist, but I will say that a lot of people show up to interviews with tongue piercings etc, or dressed poorly. Make sure you are well groomed and wear nice clothes, but you don't have to dress as if it were an office job, just dress in neat clothes that are pressed if needed. Work on your handshake - nobody likes the dead fish nandshake. Give the person eye contact and avoid fidgeting. That is just basic advice, and hopefully someone here would give you more advice. I would not expect a 16 year old to know anything but basic math and verbal skills, and would expect that I should train him or her for the job. A relative of mine was a Pizza Hut manager for a long time, and he got frustrated with young people who were not on time, and did not work hard. When there is down time (nothing to do) you should find something to do. Which of course, you will not know what to do until you are trained. Or you go tell your boss that you are not busy, and what project would he/she like you to work on in between customers? Also, during training, if you don't understand something, do ask, don't guess, cuz you might mess up then.

Good luck in your job hunting efforts. I would think that would be a fun first job. My first job was as a day camp counselor, which was also a good first job and I have fond memories of it.

peterpaul 		Hello,

Make sure to emphasis that you are really into flowers and hard work. These are two things that needs to be in florist jobs, you have to put a lot of concentration into your flowers and taking care of them. Also from this you need to love your flowers and not lose patience in them.
